Psychology and counseling are not terms that Christians should shy away from or be uncomfortable with. The base of Christian counseling is the Word of God, it uses the science of psychology and counseling to help you overcome, create lasting change, and live the life God created you to live. The science of psychology and the Bible match as God created them both. Christian Counseling integrates psychology, understanding of human behavior, and knowledge of God’s Word to obtain lasting change.
While working on my PhD in Clinical Christian Counseling, I was amazed at how much of modern psychology and counseling techniques are Bible based. I especially like how Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) matches the Word of God. CBT was created by Dr. Aaron T. Beck. CBT has become one of the most widely used and successful therapies in counseling. CBT was built on the concept that people experience spontaneous negative thoughts. Dr. Beck put them into three categories – about self, about the world, about the future. CBT is focused on the present, it is problem solving and goal based. CBT helps people identify and evaluate these negative thoughts which allows them to think more realistically and feel better emotionally. When Dr. Beck’s patients changed their beliefs about themselves, their world, and their future – they were able to achieve long-lasting change. These are scriptural principles, that is why they are so effective.
How you think is important to changing your life as stated in Proverbs 4:23. Your life is shaped by your thoughts.
Proverbs 4:23 GNT
Be careful how you think; your life is shaped by your thoughts.
Changing the way you think is vital to success. Romans 12:2 states renewing the mind as a continuous process, not a one-time event. Renewing your mind will help you get into God’s will, when you are in God’s will, you will be walking in your God given purpose. Walking in your God given purpose is the only way to true happiness and fulfillment.
Romans 12:2 NKJV
And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.
The Apostle Paul went into more detail in his Corinthian letter when he spoke about bringing every thought into captivity when pulling down strongholds. Much of counseling is about controlling your thoughts, this started in the Bible.
II Corinthians 10:4-5
For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ,
To change and improve your thoughts, you must focus on new and better thoughts as stated in Philippians 4:8. Change your thoughts, change your life.
Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things.
Achievement in any area starts with a goal. Setting goals and moving beyond the past are vital to success. The Apostle Paul and the prophet Habakkuk explained this well.
Brethren, I do not count myself to have apprehended; but one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead, I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.
Then the Lord answered me and said: “Write the vision And make it plain on tablets, That he may run who reads it.
The Bible is full of scriptures that will help you change and succeed in everyday life. Change your thoughts, and you will change your life. You are not alone, let’s work together to change your life with the Word of God and the science of psychology.
